THE STORY SO FAR…
In the northern land of Sommerlund, it has for centuries been customary for parents to send their most gifted children to the monastery of Kai on the occasion of their seventh birthday. There they are taught the skills and martial disciplines of their noble ancestors.
The warrior order of the Kai are masters of their art, and the children in their charge love and respect them in spite of the hardships of their training. For one day, when finally they have mastered the disciplines of the Kai, they will return to their homes equipped in mind and body to defend themselves and their kin against the constant threat of war from the Darklords of the west.
In olden times, during the Age of the Black moon, the Darklords waged war on Sommerlund. The conflict was a long and bitter trial of strength that ended in victory for the Sommlending at the great battle of Maakengorge. King Ulnar I (himself a gifted Kai Master), aided by the allies of Durenor, broke the Darklord armies at the pass of Moytura and forced them back into the bottomless abyss of Maakengorge. Vashna, mightiest of the Darklords, was slain upon Ulnar’s sword, called ‘Sommerswerd’ – the Sword of the Sun. Since that age, the Darklords have vowed vengeance upon Sommerlund and the House of Ulnar.
Today is the eve of the feast day of Fehmarn – the first day of spring. It is an old tradition of the Kai to gather at their monastery in the foothills of the Durncrag mountains on Fehmarn, in order to reaffirm their fealty to the God Kai and to the Sommlending House of Ulnar. Many Kai Journeymen and envoys have traveled far to return in time for tomorrow’s celebrations which mark the beginning of a new year in Sommerlund.
You are a young Kai cadet called Silent Wolf. This is the name you were given by your Kai Masters when first you entered the monastery. You are an initiate in this noble order, and this will be the eight year you have taken part in the Fehmarn ceremony. Your feelings of pride and excitement are the same now as they were when first you arrived here from your home in the village of Dage, a little over half your lifetime ago.
The past few days have been an exciting time for you and your brother cadets. The journeymen have been recounting their tales of battles won and quests fulfilled in distant lands, and everyone is filled with a sense of joy and hopeful anticipation that the New Year will bring continued peace and prosperity to your beloved homeland.
The monastery is alive with activity as the final preparations are completed for tomorrow’s feast, but for you and the other cadets the routine has changed very little. Your training and education proceeds as usual, although you find it harder than ever to concentrate as your tutor – Kai Master Star Fire – instructs your class on the geography of the Lastlands.
‘Silent Wolf’ he bellows, waking you abruptly from a daydream.
‘Perhaps you will kindly enlighten us. Tell us the name of the Wildlands coastal city?’ You hesitate, stunned into open-mouthed silence by your tutor’s unexpected question.
‘Mmm… just as I thought,’ he says, shaking his wise head disapprovingly. ‘This is not the first time I have suffered your inattention. Perhaps a penalty paid now will serve to sharpen your concentration in the future.’
Star Fire reaches into the pocket of his tunic and withdraws a shiny coin. He gazes at it for a few moments as he considers what your penalty should be. Then he says:
‘I will let fate decide your forfeiture’.
He tosses the gold coin into the air and catches it deftly on the back of his left hand. Looking down at the freshly minted head of King Ulnar the Fifth, he says aloud:
‘So be it. Extra weapons training. Tomorrow morning. One hour before dawn. You will present yourself to me equipped and ready on the training park. Is that clear?’
‘Yes, my lord,’ you reply, humbly.
A bell chimes three times in the corridor outside your classroom, signifying the end of today’s lessons. You are placing your books and parchments into your backpack in readiness to leave, when Kai Master Star Fire calls out to you once more.
‘Be punctual, Silent Wolf, or you will find yourself spending Fehmarn gathering firewood for the kitchens. And I shall see to it that you forfeit your place at the feasting table at sundown.’
The threat of missing the feast makes you swallow hard.
‘Yes, Sire,’ you reply, ‘I… I will be punctual.’

THE GAME RULES - part I
During your training as a Kai Lord you have developed fighting prowess—COMBAT SKILL and physical stamina—ENDURANCE.
The starting points of Silent Wolf in this adventure are 10 COMBAT SKILL and 20 ENDURANCE points.
If you are wounded in combat you will lose ENDURANCE points. If at any time your ENDURANCE points fall to zero or below, you are dead and the adventure is over. Lost ENDURANCE points can be regained during the course of the adventure, but your number of ENDURANCE points can never go above the number with which you start your adventure.
2.Lore-circles of the Kai:
The Kai Lords of Sommerlund devote themselves to the study of the Kai Disciplines. These skills were divided into four schools of training called ‘Lore-circles’. By mastering all of the Kai Disciplines of a Lore-circle, the Kai Lords develop their fighting prowess (COMBAT SKILL), and their physical and mental stamina (ENDURANCE) to a level far higher than any mortal warrior could otherwise attain.
Listed below are the four Lore-circles of the Кai and the skills that must be mastered in order to complete them.
By completing a Lore-circle, you may add to your COMBAT SKILL and ENDURANCE the extra bonus points that are shown below.
Circle of Fire - Weaponskill & Hunting - + 1CS /+ 1EP Circle of Light - Animal Kinship & Healing - + 2EP Circle of Solaris - Camouflage, Hunting & Tracking - + 1CS /+ 2EP Circle of the Spirit - Mindshield, Mindblast, Mind Over Matter & Sixth Sense - + 1CS/+ 3EP
All bonus points that you acquire by completing a Lore-circle are additions to your basic COMBAT SKILL and ENDURANCE scores.
Over the centuries, the Kai monks have mastered the skills of the warrior. These skills are known as the Kai Disciplines, and they are taught to all Kai Lords. You have learnt only five of the skills listed below. The choice of which five skills these are, is for you to make. As all of the Disciplines may be of use to you at some point on your perilous quest, pick your five with care. The correct use of a Discipline at the right time can save your life.
Camouflage - This Discipline enables a Kai Lord to blend in with his surroundings. In the countryside, he can hide undetected among trees and rocks and pass close to an enemy without being seen. In a town or city, it enables him to look and sound like a native of that area, and can help him to find shelter or a safe hiding place.
If you choose this skill, write ‘Camouflage’ on your Action Chart.
Hunting - This skill ensures that a Kai Lord will never starve in the wild (Silent Wolf cannot use this skill when in a city, in a chase, on a ship and etc.). He will always be able to hunt for food for himself except in areas of wasteland and desert. The skill also enables a Kai Lord to be able to move stealthily when stalking his prey.
If you choose this skill, write ‘Hunting: no need for a Meal when instructed to eat and the episode is marked with X’ on your Action Chart.
Sixth Sense - This skill may warn a Kai Lord of imminent danger. It may also reveal the true purpose of a stranger or strange object encountered in your adventure.
If you choose this skill, write ‘Sixth Sense’ on your Action Chart.
Tracking - This skill enables a Kai Lord to make the correct choice of a path in the wild, to discover the location of a person or object in a town or city and to read the secrets of footprints or tracks. If you choose this skill, write ‘Tracking’ on your Action Chart.
Healing - This Discipline can be used to restore ENDURANCE points lost in combat and related scenarios (Healing cannot be used to restore point loss from starvation). If you possess this skill you may restore 1 ENDURANCE point to your total for every numbered section of the book you pass through which is marked with green - 56 example. (This is only to be used after your ENDURANCE has fallen below its original level.) Remember that your ENDURANCE cannot rise above its original level.
If you choose this skill write ‘Healing: +1 ENDURANCE point for each section without combat and marked with green’ on your Action Chart.
Weaponskill - This Kai Discipline enables a Kai Lord to become proficient in the use of all types of weapon. When you enter combat with a weapon you have mastered, you add 3 points to your COMBAT SKILL for two-handed weapons and 2 points to your COMBAT SKILL for one-handed weapons. The rank of Kai Lord Initiate, with which you begin the Kai series, means you are skilled in two of the weapons in the list below. The fact that you are skilled with two weapons does not mean that you begin the adventure carrying any of them. However, you will have opportunities to acquire weapons during your adventure. For every Lore-circle that you complete in the Kai series, you may add an additional weapon to your Weaponskill Checklist. If you choose this skill, write ‘Weaponskill: +3 COMBAT SKILL 2HW/ +2 COMBAT SKILL 1HW points’ on your Action Chart, and tick your chosen weapons on the Weapons List. You cannot carry more than two Weapons.
Dual-wielding two one-handed weapons is possible, and if you mastered both in your Weaponskill Checklist, the bonus for the weapon in your weak hand is halved - +1CS. You can also dual-wiled two identical weapons - 2 Daggers for example.
Mindshield - The Darklords and many of the evil creatures in their command have the ability to attack you using their Mindforce. The Kai Discipline of Mindshield prevents you from losing any ENDURANCE points when subjected to this form of attack.
If you choose this skill, write ‘Mindshield: no points lost when attacked by Mindblast’ on your Action Chart.
Mindblast - This enables a Kai Lord to attack an enemy using the force of his mind. It can be used at the same time as normal combat weapons and adds two extra points to your COMBAT SKILL. Not all the creatures encountered on this adventure will be harmed by Mindblast. You will be told if a creature is immune.
If you choose this skill, write ‘Mindblast: +2 COMBAT SKILL points’ on your Action Chart.
Animal Kinship - This skill enables a Kai Lord to communicate with some animals and to be able to guess the intentions of others.
If you choose this skill, write ‘Animal Kinship’ on your Action Chart.
Mind Over Matter - Mind Over Matter
Mastery of this Discipline enables a Kai Lord to move small objects with his powers of concentration.
If you choose this skill, write ‘Mind Over Matter’ on your Action Chart.
If you successfully complete the mission as set in Book 1 of Lone Wolf, you may add a further Kai Discipline of your choice to your Action Chart in Book 2. This additional skill, together with your five other skills and any Special Items that you have picked up in Book 1, may then be used in the next adventure of the Lone Wolf series which is called Fire on the Water.

THE GAME RULES - part II
Your basic possessions comprise a green tunic and a cloak of a Kai initiate. You also have a backpack, a belt, and a leather pouch in which you keep your money (Gold Crowns). To find out how much money you have, pick a number from the Random Number Table. The number you choose equals the number of Gold Crowns you possess at the start of the adventure (Note this number in the Belt Pouch of your Action Chart.)
How Much Can You Carry?
The maximum number of weapons that you may carry is two.
These must be stored in your Backpack. Because space is limited, you may only keep a maximum of eight articles, including Meals, in your Backpack at any one time.
Special Items are not carried in the Backpack. When you discover a Special Item, you will be told how to carry it.Special items are limited to 10 if the text in the book does not say that the item does not require any space.
These are always carried in the Belt Pouch. It will hold a maximum of fifty crowns.
Food is carried in your Backpack. Each Meal counts as one item.
Any item that may be of use and can be picked up on your adventure and entered on your Action Chart is given capital letters in the text. Unless you are told it is a Special Item, carry it in your Backpack.
How to Use Your Equipment
Weapons aid you in combat. If you have the Kai Discipline of Weaponskill and the correct weapon, it adds points to your COMBAT SKILL. If you enter a combat with no weapons, deduct 4 points from your COMBAT SKILL and fight with your bare hands. If you find a weapon during the adventure, you may pick it up and use it. (Remember you can only carry two Weapons at once.) You may use one two-handed weapon or dual-wield two one-handed weapons in combat. You can't switch weapons during combat.
During your travels you will discover various useful items which you may wish to keep. (Remember you can only carry eight items in your Backpack at once.) You may exchange or discard them at any point when you are not involved in combat.
Each Special Item has a particular purpose or effect. You may be told this when the item is discovered, or it may be revealed to you as the adventure progresses.
The local currency is the Crown, which is a small gold coin. Gold Crowns can be used on your adventure to pay for transport, food, or even as a bribe! Many of the creatures that you will encounter possess Gold Crowns, or have them hidden in their lairs. Whenever you kill a creature, you may take any Gold Crowns that it has and put them in your Belt Pouch.
You will need to eat regularly during your adventure. If you do not have any food when you are instructed to eat a Meal, you will lose 3 ENDURANCE points. If you have chosen the Kai Discipline of Hunting as one of your five skills, you can hunt for food when the text allows it - sections with X.
This can restore ENDURANCE points to your total when swallowed after combat. It cannot be used to increase ENDURANCE points immediately prior to a combat. If you discover any other potions during the adventure, you will be told then of their effect. All Healing Potions are Backpack Items and can be used to heal any type of damage.
Upon entering the Kai Monastery, every initiate is given a Map of the Lastlands. This map the location of your native country - Sommerlund - and its capital city - Holmgard. It also shows the land of Durenor away to the east, and Wildlands which separate the two kingdoms.
Combat and combat-related damage (other) - Silent Wolf can use the Healing Discipline to restore ENDURANCE points in each green episode of the adventure. This type of damage can be also healed with any mentions within the text itself - "Restore X END points". Starvation/Hunger damage - This type of damage occurs when a meal is not consumed on time and cannot be healed by the Healing Discipline. Starvation damage can be healed by the consumption of a meal at any numbered section with the letter S next to the episode if a meal is present (either by Hunting Discipline, Meal in the Backpack or mentioned in the text). This type of damage can be also healed with any mentions within the text itself - "Restore X END points". !Note - Certain meals have also healing properties. If such a meal is used it can restore starvation damage + the mentioned END of any combat or combat-related damage.
EACH TIME WHEN THE HERO SKIPS A MEAL IT CAUSES MINUS 3 ENDURANCE POINTS. ONE MEAL HEALS ONLY 3 ENDURANCE POINTS CAUSED BY STARVATION DAMAGE/ SKIPPING A MEAL. MEALS CAN'T HEAL COMBAT OR COMBAT-RELATED DAMAGE.
Rules for Combat
There will be occasions on your adventure when you have to fight an enemy. The enemy’s COMBAT SKILL and ENDURANCE points are given in the text. Lone Wolf’s aim in the combat is to kill the enemy by reducing his ENDURANCE points to zero while losing as few ENDURANCE points as possible himself.
At the start of a combat, enter Lone Wolf’s and the enemy’s ENDURANCE points in the appropriate boxes on the Combat Record section of your Action Chart.
The sequence for combat is as follows.
Add any extra points gained through your Kai Disciplines, Lore-circles and other bonuses to your current COMBAT SKILL total.
Subtract the COMBAT SKILL of your enemy from this total. The result is your Combat Ratio. Enter it on the Action Chart.
Lone Wolf (COMBAT SKILL 15) is ambushed by a Winged Devil (COMBAT SKILL 20). He is not given the opportunity to evade combat, but must stand and fight as the creature swoops down on him. Lone Wolf has the Kai Discipline of Mindblast, so he adds 2 points to his COMBAT SKILL, giving a total COMBAT SKILL of 17.
He subtracts the Winged Devil’s COMBAT SKILL from his own, giving a Combat Ratio of −3 (17 − 20 = −3). −3 is noted on the Action Chart as the Combat Ratio.
When you have your Combat Ratio, pick a number from the Random Number Table.
Turn to the Combat Results Table. Along the top of the chart are shown the Combat Ratio numbers. Find the number that is the same as your Combat Ratio and cross-reference it with the random number that you have picked (the random numbers appear on the side of the chart). You now have the number of ENDURANCE points lost by both Lone Wolf and his enemy in this round of combat. (E represents points lost by the enemy; LW represents points lost by Lone Wolf.)
The Combat Ratio between Lone Wolf and Winged Devil has been established as −3. If the number taken from the Random Number Table is a 6, then the result of the first round of combat is:
On the Action Chart, mark the changes in ENDURANCE points to the participants in the combat.
Unless otherwise instructed, or unless you have an option to evade, the next round of combat now starts.
Repeat the sequence from Stage 3.
This process of combat continues until the ENDURANCE points of either the enemy or Lone Wolf are reduced to zero or below, at which point that combatant is declared dead. If Lone Wolf is dead, the adventure is over. If the enemy is dead, Lone Wolf proceeds but with his ENDURANCE points possibly reduced.
A summary of Combat Rules appears in the back of this book.
Evasion of Combat
During your adventure you may be given the chance to evade combat. If you have already engaged in a round of combat and decide to evade, calculate the combat for that round in the usual manner. All points lost by the enemy as a result of that round are ignored, and you make your escape. Only Lone Wolf may lose ENDURANCE points during that round, but then that is the risk of running away! You may only evade if the text of the particular section allows you to do so.
Levels of Kai Training
The following table is a guide to the ranks and titles that are bestowed upon Kai Lords at each stage of their training. As you successfully complete each adventure in the Lone Wolf series, you will gain an additional Kai Discipline and gradually progress towards mastery of the ten basic Kai Disciplines.
Initiate—You begin the Lone Wolf adventures with this level of Kai training
Warmarn or Journeyman
Beyond the ten basic skills of the Kai Master await the secrets of the higher Kai Disciplines or ‘Magnakai’. By acquiring the wisdom of the Magnakai, a Kai Lord can progress towards the ultimate achievement and become a Kai Grand Master.

You are awoken from your sleep by the clockwork chimes of the timepiece you placed beside your pillow the previous evening. In the dim candlelight of the initiate's dormitory, you arise from your bunk and dress quickly in your green Kai tunic and cloak, pausing briefly to adjust your belt and backpack before leaving your sleeping comrades. You are determined not to be late for your training session with Kai Master Star Fire, mindful of the forfeit he will impose if you break your promise to be punctual. You leave by the dormitory's north door which opens directly onto the training park in the centre of the Kai Monastery.
Star Fire is already there waiting for you. He is dressed in his ceremonial robes for today's festivities. In the dim, pre-dawn moonlight, your sharp eyes can see this formidable warrior standing beside a weapons rack at the centre of the training park. He greets you with a nod of his head and tells you to to pick one of the wooden practise weapons from the rack. You choose a sword, fashioned from sturdy Sommlending oak, and take up your position opposite him in readiness to begin.
'Battles are not always fought in broad daylight, Silent Wolf,'he says, as he pulls a wooden axe from the rack. 'The gloom of this morn will serve to sharpen your senses. Pity the same cannot be said for your attentiveness in class.'
Patiently your Kai Master puts you through your paces, teaching you correctly how to parry and block and strike to greatest effect. After half an hour of intense instruction, you are breathless and drenched with sweat, despite the frosty chill of the morning air. Star Fire, conversely, shows not the slightest sigh of fatigue after the exertions of training.
'Well done, Silent Wolf. You may rack your sword and rest awhile. Your shortfalls in the classroom seem to be compensated by your natural ability with weapons. You show great promise. Now, if only you would apply the same effort to your studies, then perhaps one day you too will attain the rank of Kai Master.'
You thank Star Fire for his compliment and his advice. He never gives praise unduly, and his approving words fill you with a resolve not to daydream in future classes. You place your wooden sword into the rack and unhook a flask of water. You are taking your first swallow when suddenly the stillness is shattered by the clang of the gatehouse bell. The monastery alarm has been sounded.
'For the love of Ishir...' exclaims Star Fire. He is staring intently towards the west, towards a sky that is growing strangely darker with every passing moment. At first you can see nothing in the gloom, but then your eyes discern something moving in the ebon darkness. Hundreds upon hundrends of winged creatures are approaching the monastery.
'Kraan!' gasps Star Fire. 'Kai preserve us!'
The doleful clang of the alarm bell has awoken everyone in the monastery. A few Kai Masters and lower ranks are now emerging from the dormitories. Most are without their battle armour, but every one of them is armed in readiness to defend your stronghold from attack.
The first wave of winged Kraan swoop down from out of the darkening sky. As they come screeching towards the monastery's gatehouse, you see that they are carrying Giaks upon their leathery backs. These fierce creatures are the mainstay of the Darklords armies. What they may lack in physical size and intelligence is more than compensated for by their vast numbers. The doors of the gatehouse are half open, and as the leading Kraan drop their riders and wheel, these first few Giaks scramble to their feet and come rushing headlong towards the opening.
They are determined to gain entry before the great doors of the monastery can be fully closed.
'Silent Wolf, follow me!' commands Star Fire, and he turns and runs swiftly towards the gatehouse entrance.
If you choose immediately to obey Kai Master Star Fire's order, turn to392
If you decide to arm yourself with a real weapon from the rack before following him, turn to497

You cast your eye along the row of real weapons that are stacked in the rack. They are as follows: Dagger ( 0 ), Mace ( 1 ), Short Sword ( 2 ), Warhammer ( 3 ), Short Sword ( 4 ), Sword ( 5 ), Axe ( 6 ), Sword ( 7 ), Broadsword ( 8 ), Axe ( 9 ).
You are trying to make your mind up which weapon is best to take, when suddenly Kai Master Star Fire's deep voice bellows angrily:
'Silent Wolf - to me, NOW!'
Pick a number from the Random Number Table. Now match the number you have picked to the which appears in brackets nexto to each of the weapons listed above. The result indicates the weapon you snatch from the rack as hurriedly you turn and run after your Kai Master in reaction to his terse command.
